FIREPROOF ROLLING SHUTTER

Application of Ceramic Fiber in Fireproof Rolling Doors

In the field of building safety, fireproof rolling doors are a crucial line of defense for protecting lives and property. The fire resistance of these doors largely depends on the thermal insulation materials used. In recent years, ceramic fiber, with its outstanding overall performance, has become a 'star' material for enhancing the fire resistance rating and safety level of fireproof rolling doors. It is not merely a simple substitute; through its exceptional high-temperature resistance, excellent insulation properties, lightweight and thermal shock-resistant physical characteristics, as well as safe and environmentally friendly chemical stability, it has redefined the standard for high-performance fireproof rolling doors. Below, we will explore in depth how ceramic fiber, as the core material, constructs a strong and intelligent fire barrier.

Core Advantages:

1. Exceptional high-temperature resistance: Ceramic fiber materials can operate for long periods in environments exceeding 1000°C and can even withstand temperatures up to 1400°C for short durations without melting. This allows fireproof roller shutters made from them to maintain structural integrity for a long time during intense fires, preventing rapid burnout or collapse, and providing valuable time for personnel evacuation and firefighting.

2. Outstanding thermal insulation: Ceramic fibers have an extremely low thermal conductivity, making them a highly efficient thermal barrier. During a fire, they significantly slow down heat transfer to the back (safe) side. This not only prevents the fire from spreading but also ensures that the temperature on the protected side of the roller shutter does not rise excessively within the standard-required duration, avoiding the risk of igniting nearby materials and maintaining relative safety along evacuation routes.

3. Lightweight and thermal shock resistant: Compared to heavy steel fire doors, ceramic fiber materials are very light. This reduces the load on the roller shutter lifting mechanism, allowing smoother operation. Furthermore, their excellent thermal shock resistance enables them to withstand sudden, extreme temperature changes from room temperature to over a thousand degrees Celsius without cracking or crumbling, which is crucial in emergency fire situations.

4. Safe and environmentally friendly: Ceramic fiber is a Class A non-combustible material that does not burn or produce toxic black smoke at high temperatures. It is an ideal substitute for asbestos, preventing secondary harm caused by burning materials during a fire.

Applications of Ceramic Fiber in Rolling Doors:

In inorganic fireproof rolling doors, ceramic fiber is generally not used alone but serves as a core component, combined with other materials to form a multi-layer composite curtain surface:

1. Intermediate Insulation Layer: The most common material is ceramic fiber blanket, typically 10mm to 25mm thick, with a temperature resistance of up to 1200°C, serving as the main thermal insulation barrier of the curtain.

2. Fire Protection Layer: Ceramic fiber cloth or sintered ceramic fiber cloth is used as the wrapping or reinforcement layer of the curtain, utilizing its excellent high-temperature strength to protect the internal insulation layer.

3. Curtain Structure Diagram: A standard inorganic fireproof rolling door curtain may be layered from outside to inside as follows: the outermost layer is fireproof decorative cloth (providing aesthetics and initial fire protection), the middle consists of multiple layers of ceramic fiber blanket (the core insulation layer), and the back side is a fireproof heat-reflective cloth (such as aluminum foil cloth to reflect heat), stitched with fireproof thread and reinforced with fireproof mesh to enhance overall integrity.

Selection and Application Considerations

1. Prefer sintered process products: For more demanding applications, it is recommended to choose ceramic fiber sintered cloth. It has been treated at high temperatures to remove organics, so it will not produce black smoke or darken upon first heating, maintaining cleaner and more stable performance.

2. Pay attention to organic content: Ordinary ceramic fiber textiles contain about 15% organic fibers. They will carbonize and smoke, and may even flame upon first heating, which is normal, and will return to white afterward. If sensitive to this, choose products with low organic content or sintered products.

3. Performance trade-offs: Ceramic fiber roller doors are lightweight, flexible, and high-temperature resistant, but it is important to note that their mechanical strength is different from steel roller doors, so avoid scratching or tearing them with hard objects.
