Application of Ceramic Fiber Fireproof Gaskets on Exhaust Ducts

27

In smoke prevention, exhaust and high-temperature ventilation systems, duct flange gaskets must be non-combustible materials. As stipulated in the Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Ventilation and Air Conditioning Works (GB50243-2016): the main body, frame, fixing materials and sealing gaskets of fire-resistant air ducts shall all be non-combustible materials, with fire resistance ratings complying with design requirements. Galvanized steel sheets or fiber-reinforced fire-resistant boards are commonly adopted for the duct body of smoke control and exhaust systems, which fully satisfy code requirements.

Conventionally, asbestos ropes or asbestos boards were used as flange gaskets for pipeline connections in smoke exhaust systems. Nevertheless, asbestos is hazardous to human health and the ecological environment, hence its use has been progressively restricted and phased out.
Ceramic fiber is manufactured by melting natural kaolin in an electric arc furnace followed by blowing, or via resistance wire spinning. It offers a continuous service temperature of 1000°C and a short-term peak temperature resistance of 1260°C, complying with the requirements of GB/T 16400-2003.
Integrating the superior characteristics of traditional thermal insulation and refractory materials, ceramic fiber is a lightweight fibrous refractory, heat-insulating and energy-saving material. It features non-combustibility, excellent heat resistance and thermal stability, low bulk density, remarkable energy-saving effect, as well as non-toxicity, harmlessness and odorlessness. Initially, it was primarily applied to industrial furnaces, heat treatment equipment and other thermal facilities in thermal processing and heat treatment industries. It has since gained widespread adoption in machinery, metallurgy, chemical engineering, petroleum, transportation, shipbuilding, electronics, aerospace, atomic energy and other high-end technical sectors.

Ceramic fiber products are deployed as flange gaskets for smoke exhaust ducts by virtue of their compressional resilience, heat resistance and non-combustibility. Among ceramic fiber series products, ceramic fiber paper serves perfectly as a sealing material.

Ceramic Fiber Paper

Ceramic fiber paper is produced by washing blown ceramic fiber cotton, adding binders and undergoing vacuum forming. It boasts high mechanical strength, outstanding flexibility and easy cutting performance, making it an ideal raw material for fabricating high-temperature gaskets, seals, thermal insulation components and electrical insulation parts.

Advantages of Ceramic Fiber Gaskets

  1. Continuous service temperature up to 1000°C, short-term temperature resistance reaching 1260°C

  2. Excellent resistance to acid and alkali corrosion, as well as erosion from molten metals such as aluminum and zinc

  3. Superior high-temperature mechanical strength and reliable thermal insulation performance

  4. Higher electrical insulation performance at ambient and elevated temperatures compared with glass fiber

  5. Non-toxic, harmless and odor-free
