Why ceramic fiber blanket provides excellent thermal insulation and fire resistance?

49

In the field of industrial high-temperature applications, there is a seemingly unremarkable material – a white cotton-like blanket that feels soft and fluffy, yet it can withstand flames exceeding 1000°C. It works as both a top-tier thermal insulator and an outstanding fire-resistant barrier.

This is ceramic fiber blanket.

I. Two Manufacturing Processes with Respective Advantages

Ceramic fiber blanket is mainly produced via two processes: the spun process and the blown process.

  • Spun fibers are thicker and longer, with a typical diameter of 3.0–5.0 µm and length of 150–250 mm. They deliver superior tensile and flexural strength and are less prone to cracking when fabricated into fiber modules.

  • Blown fibers are finer, with a diameter of 2.0–3.0 µm and length of 100–200 mm, featuring softer overall texture.

Aladdin adopts long spun fibers combined with a double-sided needle-punching process. The finished fiber blanket boasts high toughness and excellent resilience, retaining favorable flexibility both before and after heating. This process greatly improves fiber interlocking and anti-delamination performance.

II. Superior Thermal Insulation: Three Mechanisms to Block Heat Transfer

1. Long Path Effect to Block Thermal ConductionThe fibers are merely 2–5 micrometers in diameter but reach 150–250 millimeters in length. Such slender structure turns the heat conduction path into a labyrinth. Heat can only travel slowly along tortuous fibers and dissipate gradually. Double-sided needling creates denser fiber interweaving and further extends the conduction route.

2. Zero-Convection Effect to Trap AirCeramic fiber blanket is a loose and porous material with porosity above 90%. The tiny pore size is smaller than the mean free path of air molecules, locking gas molecules inside the pores and preventing air convection.

3. Low Thermal Conductivity to Maintain Thermal BarrierIts thermal conductivity can drop to 0.12 W/(m·K) at 600°C. At 1000°C, the value is only a fraction of that of traditional refractory materials. Low thermal conductivity means slow and inefficient heat transmission.

III. Fire Resistance: Robust Performance as Class A Non-Combustible Material

Ceramic fiber blanket is a Class A non-combustible material. It will not catch fire under open flame and generates no peculiar odor.

More importantly, it maintains structural stability at high temperatures, with thermal linear shrinkage generally controlled within 3%.

Thanks to these properties, ceramic fiber blanket has gained wider applications in fire protection: fire blankets, fire rolling shutters, thermal & fire-resistant liners for archives and vaults, etc.

IV. Additional Performance Characteristics

Apart from thermal insulation and fire resistance, Aladdin ceramic fiber blanket features good resistance to chemical erosion (except hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid and strong alkalis), excellent thermal shock resistance, effective sound absorption, stable thermal performance, strong anti-powdering capability, good elasticity, toughness and tear resistance.
