Ceramic Fiber Insulation Solution for Carbon Baking Furnaces — Reduce Load & Boost Efficiency for Thermal Equipment
In the production of carbon products, baking is a critical process that determines the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and mechanical strength of finished goods. Carbon baking furnaces normally operate continuously at a high temperature of 1250℃ for 320 to 420 hours, imposing extremely stringent requirements on furnace lining insulation. Traditional refractory brick linings are heavy, poorly sealed and high in energy consumption. Ceramic fiber insulation solutions are changing this situation.

I. Traditional Pain Points of Carbon Baking Furnaces
Carbon baking furnaces are mainly classified into open ring-type baking furnaces and covered baking furnaces, widely used for the baking of aluminum carbon anodes and cathodes as well as steel-making electrodes.
For a long time, carbon baking furnaces have been plagued by a core issue: severe air leakage under negative pressure. During baking operation, poor quality, deformation and cracking of furnace wall materials make it hard to insert or seal the wind baffles tightly, allowing massive cold air to leak into the furnace. This not only causes heavy heat loss and persistently high fuel consumption, but also directly reduces product qualification rate and pushes up enterprise costs.
The furnace cover built with traditional refractory bricks has more prominent problems. Frequent opening and closing operations easily crack the refractory bricks, which may lead to flame penetration into the furnace, potential structural steel damage and severe energy loss. In addition, the total lifting weight of brick-built furnace covers exceeds 20 tons, requiring a dedicated 30-ton overhead crane for hoisting. This results in high equipment costs and operational risks.

II. Solution with Ceramic Fiber Modules
Ceramic fiber modules offer an effective solution to the sealing challenge of carbon baking furnaces. A ceramic fiber module is an accordion-shaped assembly made by continuously folding and compressing ceramic fiber blankets with embedded anchor bolts.
Core Principle: Gap-free Sealing. After module installation, the binding straps are removed. The compressed fiber blankets rebound and press tightly against one another to achieve a fully gap-free furnace lining. This feature fundamentally solves the negative-pressure air leakage problem of carbon baking furnaces and effectively improves product qualification rate.
III. Structural Design for Different Zones
The insulation of carbon baking furnaces covers furnace bottom, side walls, fire passage walls, cross walls, furnace roof and flue. Each zone has distinct requirements for insulation materials.
Impregnation System Insulation — The impregnation heating furnace (preheating furnace) runs at a long-term working temperature below 650℃, while the combustion chamber operates at approximately 800℃. A composite structure of Type 1050 standard ceramic fiber blankets and modules is adopted:
Furnace walls, end walls and doors: 280 mm insulation thickness (30 mm backing blanket + 250 mm modules)
Furnace roof: 350 mm insulation thickness (50 mm backing blanket + 300 mm modules)
Baking System Insulation — The ring-type baking furnace works at a long-term temperature of 1250℃ with gas heating. The furnace lining adopts a composite structure of zirconia-containing ceramic fiber modules and zirconia-containing ceramic fiber blankets, with a total insulation thickness of 350 mm (50 mm zirconia-containing backing blanket + 300 mm zirconia-containing modules).
Furnace Cover Insulation — Lightweight ceramic fiber module structure replaces traditional brick furnace covers. The thickness is around 210 mm (30 mm blanket + 180 mm modules), reinforced with heat-resistant steel.
IV. Core Advantages of Ceramic Fiber Solutions
Lightweight Weight ReductionThe improved ceramic fiber module furnace cover weighs only 1/6 of the original brick version. It greatly lowers hoisting difficulty and equipment requirements and reduces the overall load on the furnace body.
Superior Sealing PerformanceRebounding and tightly pressed modules form a gap-free furnace lining, completely eliminating negative-pressure air leakage and preventing cold air ingress and hot air escape from the source.
Remarkable Energy SavingLow thermal conductivity minimizes heat dissipation. For conventional tunnel kilns, the adoption of ceramic fiber insulation can save 100–200 tons of coal annually.
Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance & Long Service LifeCeramic fiber materials resist cracking and damage under rapid temperature changes, with a service life of 5–10 years.
No Preheating Required & Fast ConstructionThe furnace can be put into service right after module installation without furnace drying procedures, significantly shortening the construction period.
