1. Importance of Slag Removal for Molten Steel
From tapping to the completion of pouring molten steel, the most critical operating procedures are slag removal purification and slag retaining pouring. The process features high labor intensity, intense thermal radiation, compromised casting quality, and great operational risks for on-site workers. How to solve these challenges easily and reliably has become an urgent problem to be addressed in the pouring process.

2. Characteristics of Slag Removal with Ceramic Fiber Blanket

The zirconium-containing aluminum silicate needled fiber blanket manufactured by Aladdin can perfectly solve this problem.The material features light weight, soft texture, proper agglomeration temperature, strong slag gathering capacity, excellent heat insulation and light shielding performance, as well as safe and convenient application.
It has the following characteristics:
  1. Aladdin zirconium-containing ceramic fiber is a neutral thermal-insulating and slag-coalescing material. It is universally applicable for surface covering, slag gathering, slag removal and slag retaining of molten steel and iron with various chemical compositions.

  2. The slag retaining blanket is soft in texture, which can be easily torn thinner or into small pieces by hand, with a low bulk density of 128 kg/m³.

  3. The blanket pieces float intact on the surface of molten steel and iron without adhering to the tank wall all the time. They rise and fall with the molten liquid during pouring, and all residues floating on the liquid surface are strongly gathered around the blanket.

  4. The covering thickness can be adjusted freely. It blocks light and avoids red-hot radiation with outstanding thermal insulation effect. It greatly improves the harsh working environment caused by thermal radiation for pouring workers, making operation safer and easier.

Before pouring, tear the fiber blanket into thin sheets of 5~10 mm and attach them around the pouring cup. This prevents splashing of molten steel and iron during pouring, which could cause personal injury or damage to the mold. Especially in lost foam casting and V-process casting, splashed molten metal can easily burn through the sealing film, leading to air leakage and even box collapse. Applying zirconia-aluminum fiber blanket around the pouring cup or riser for every mold ensures safe production.

After pouring, the residual fiber blanket left at the ladle bottom or blocked at the ladle mouth can be easily removed with no adhesion. Even in the red-hot high-temperature state, its soft texture allows the whole piece to be taken out simply by prying gently with an iron rod.
